Kinematics Portfolio Assignment
Directions: Watch the following video, and follow along with the calculations performed by the person in the video. You will be using the NUMBERS BELOW to complete the lab. Do NOT use the numbers in the video. This is an EXAMPLE of what you will be doing and the math you will need to perform.

In this lab, you are rolling a marble across a table, letting it roll off the edge, and catching it in a cup. How far away from the table should you place the cup to catch the marble when it rolls off the table? We will assume the table has NO friction.
To figure out this problem, you need to know how fast the marble is moving in the vertical direction and how long it will take to hit the ground once it rolls off the table. Using this information you can calculate the horizontal distance the marble travels once it rolls off the table and place the cup at that distance. To figure out how fast the marble is rolling horizontally, the horizontal velocity, you place a meter stick on the table and measure how long it takes the marble to travel this distance. Three trials were conducted and the results are below.
Use the video above and the information below to calculate how far away from the table you should place a cup on the ground to catch the marble.
Horizontal Times taken to travel 1.0 m ON the table
Useful formulas and information
Remember that a projectile, has movement and velocity in TWO directions, horizontal and vertical
Speed or Velocity in either direction = distance / time
Vertical distance dropped = 1/2at2
Acceleration due to gravity = a or g = is -9/8 m/s2
X = distance

Use the video above and the information below to calculate how far away from the table you should place a cup on the ground to catch the marble.
- Horizontal Distance traveled ON table = 1.0 m
- Vertical Distance (height of table) = 0.75 m
- How far away from the table should you place a cup, to catch the rolling marble?
Horizontal Times taken to travel 1.0 m ON the table
- Trial 1 = 0.83s
- Trial 2 = 0.85s
- Trial 3 = 0.87s
